‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Tops Our Netflix Picks For February

Avatar: The Last Airbender. (L to R) Kiawentiio as Katara, Gordon Cormier as Aang, Ian Ousley as Sokka in season 1 of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Cr. Robert Falconer/Netflix © 2023

Traditionally, February is something a slender month for Netflix — even in a leap year! But while the list of licensed film and television coming to the service next month is quite slim, it has a few highlights in its original programing offerings. Chief among them is, of course, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Based on the Nickelodeon aminated series of the same name, this live action remake has been long in development and caused a stir among fans when Avatar‘s original creators, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, parted ways with the project over creative differences. Despite this, the trailers and promo stills suggest a level of fidelity to the source unseen in the previous live action adaptation. Like that film — which we won’t mention any futher here — the presumed first season of The Last Airbender will focus on the first animated season, “Book 1: Water,” with two young members of the Southern Water Tribe discovering the long missing Avatar frozen in ice 100 years after the Fire Nation attacked and started a century-long war of agression on the other realms of the world.

Oh, also, certain martial artists have the ablility to command (or bend) the elements. But the young Avatar, an airbender named Aang (Gordon Cormier), can bend all four elements to his will. Well, provided he ever properly learns to use them all effectively. The program debuts on February 22nd.

And as we are suckers for documentaries about cults and alleged cults, Netflix provides yet again with the French docuseries Raël: The Alien Prophet. It tells the tale of a former racing journalist and budding pop star(!) who started a UFO religion in the 1970s following a purported alien abduction. While one of the more progessive and seemingly benevolent new relgions to spring up in the later 20th Century, it is still viewed with derision and suspiscion — and some reasonable criticism. One wonders if this series will do the same when it arrives on February 7th.

Of course, these are just our picks for the month. Take a look at the full list below to find your next must-watch film or TV show. Also, pay particular attention to the items leaving Netflix in the next month.
