Watch The Trailer For Randall Parks Adaptation Of Adrian Tomines Shortcomings

Randall Park is making his directorial debut this summer with Shortcomings. Based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine, the film stars Justin H. Min as Ben, an art house theater manager and Criterion Collection enthusiast who begins to explore what he really wants when his girlfriend moves to New York for an internship. Although, the trailer for the film suggests she moved for different reasons. Will Ben grow up some by learning the truth or will chasing her to Manhattan make things worse?

Sherry Cola, Ally Maki, Debby Ryan, Tavi Gevinson, Sonoya Mizuno, Jacob Batalon, and Timothy Simons also star in the adaptation, which Tomine wrote himself. The vibe here definitely tracks with his work with an added component of twenty-something films from earlier in the century. Granted, that sort of thing can be evergreen even if they feel rarer in the days of big action tentpoles. If nothing else, it’s nice to see a comic-book-movie based outside of the usual genres make it to release.

Shortcomings comes to theaters on August 4th.
