Film Review: Pom Klementieff Kills It in ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’

In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team must track down a dangerous weapon before it falls into the wrong hands. The spy genre has always served as an analogue for the fears of the populace, so it seems only natural that a nuclear warhead would be updated to a rouge Artificial Intelligence. While the film takes a more fantastic interpretation of AI, the ability to dismantle the truth in a politically unstable world never felt more terrifyingly real.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning works best when it embraces its pulpy sensibilities with gadgets, secret codes, femme fatales, and death defying stunts. Where the film looses credibility is when it tries to give Ethan Hunt an emotional connection to new characters he (and the audience) just met. The film concludes while setting up part 2 and I felt like the plot could have easily ended in one film. It’s not a mind-bending “leave your jaw on the floor” type ending like in Across the Spider-Verse– But rather, the bad guy is still at large, see you in the next film.

One standout performance was Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3) as the assassin known as Paris. Her character design and stage presence make a lasting impression even if she has very few lines in the film. In all honesty, Pom’s performance as Paris is what elevates Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning from just another sequel to a really enjoyable watch. I hope Pom get’s a leading role in her own film soon, she definitely has the charisma.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is now playing in theaters.
