Ana Nogueira To Write ‘Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow’

With the writers and actors strikes resolved — for the moment, anyway — attention returns to building out the DC Cinematic Universe.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor and playwright Ana Nogueira will script Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow for DC Studios and Warner Bros. The project was announced earlier in the year as part of what studio co-CEO James Gunn called the “Chapter One” initiative for the DCU. Taking its title and cues from the Tom King and Bilquis Evely series of the same name, it is not expected to be a direct adaptation. Instead, it will be retain its spirit, not unlike the way Batman Begins takes inspiration from Batman: Year One. When the project was first announced, Gunn said the film would retain the “very different type of Supergirl” from that tale. It will also feature Krypto, though we hope in different circumstances.

Nogueira was originally attached to write a Supergirl film with Sasha Calle in the title role before the upheaval that led to Gunn taking creative control of the DC film and TV output. As Calle was one of the bright spots in the otherwise dreadful Flash feature film, we hope she gets a chance to play Kara again, but we expect the part will be recast with someone who more resembles the character’s traditional appearance.

No director is attached, but with Nogueira’s deal closing, it is a sign that Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran‘s plans for the new DC film continuity are still moving ahead following the Writers Strike over the summer. It is also a sign that Warner Bros. Discovery still considers DC a priority, even as it cancels other WB icons like Coyote vs. Acme, although that completed film is now being shopped to other studios for distribution.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is not yet scheduled for release.
