Diana’s 1984 adventure may be her last.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, plans for a third Wonder Woman movie from director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot are not moving forward as James Gunn and Peter Safran plot the course of an interconnected film and television DC Studios universe. Per the report, Jenkins even handed in a treatment (co-written by Geoff Johns) recently, but was soon told by Gunn, Safran, and Warner Bros. Pictures chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy that the film as designed would not fit the new DC strategy.
Currently, it is unclear if Jenkins and Johns will get another shot at making the film better fit the emerging DC Studios plan or if Gunn and Safran plan a more wide-scale reboot of the DC Universe with everyone recast.
THR seems to believe this might be the case, but it creates another logistic nightmare as Gunn’s DC Universe begins with established DC faces in his film The Suicide Squad and television series Peacemaker. Indeed, both Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) — from both projects — make cameo appearances in Black Adam. Peacemaker is also headed for a second season. Would Gunn be willing to end his own projects for a new vision of the DC heroes? And that’s before you consider the possibility that both Dwayne Johnson and Henry Cavill‘s assertions that they will return may also be untrue as the new DCU comes into view.
Wilder still is the suggestion that the current DC cycle will end with next December’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom with star Jason Momoa switching from the king of the seas to the Main Man Lobo in a subsequent DC Studios outing. Such drastic changes are commonplace in the DC comic book multiverse, but unheard of in other forms of media.
Gunn and Safran are said to be presenting their plan to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav next week. If things go well, the DC Universe will be a fundamentally different creative space.
