The Madame Web cast continues to expand.
Deadline reports Emma Roberts has joined the cast of the Sony Spider-Man Universe film. Dakota Johnson is set to star as Madame Web, a precognitive mutant created by Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr who also happened to be blind and paralyzed. Using a sophisticated web-themed rig, she was mobile and able to use her talents to tip off Spider-Man to certain crimes and activities. She came to some prominence in the 1990s Spider-Man animated series on FOX, where she used her enigmatic appearance and precog talents to send Peter on various missions. And as an ally of The Beyonder, she was actually testing Peter for a perilous journey with multiversal implications. The film will be directed by S.J. Clarkson from a script by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (with Kerem Sanga contributing to a draft). Sydney Sweeney , Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced and Tahar Rahim are also set to appear in the film.
Roberts role is, of course, unknown. It is now standard practice for both Sony and Marvel to offer no comment on breaking casting news. Speculation can run wide into any of the many Spider-Man characters Sony controls — like, say, Black Cat — or a whole new character to expand Cassandra Webb’s (Johnson) origins. Madame Web rarely fights opponents directly, but the Sony Spider-Man films are known for being a little looser with the source material, so a film detailing her earlier days is always possible.
Madame Web is currently set for a July 7, 2023 release.
