A rumor circulating around last month’s D23 Expo may have some truth to it.
Slashfilm claims earlier reports indicating Harrison Ford will play General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in upcoming Marvel Studios projects is, in fact, true. As part of the previous whisper cycle, it was said this announcement was to be part of Marvel’s presentation during the Expo, but was scuttled as it might take attention away from the fifth and presumably final Indiana Jones picture. It is still unclear if that aspect of the rumor was also true.
The character first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe via the late William Hurt, who debuted in The Incredible Hulk and stayed in the universe through Captain America: Civil War and, most recently, Black Widow. Sadly, he passed away on March 13th of this year. For some time afterward, many assumed the character might be retired, particularly after the cast of Thunderbolts was announced at D23. The group’s name could easily be an homage to him and not a team he directs, after all. Of course, letting the character go would also mean cutting off certain story avenues, like the Red Hulk Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) referenced in last week’s episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Recasting, particularly with a name as legendary as Ford’s, provides certain advantages as well.
Although, we can’t help but wonder how the often-cantankerous actor will react to the Marvel Method and, potentially, lending himself to a Red Hulk visual effect should Thunderbolts go in that direction. But we imagine it might make for a fun press day … although, he is also legendarily cantankerous in those settings, too.
Slashfilm suggests he may debut as Ross in Captain America: New World Order, a film which seems to gain more and more importance to the Multiverse Saga with each passing day. That film is set for release on May 3rd, 2024. Thunderbolts, meanwhile, will bout on July 26th that same year.
