The Stranger Things executive producer is ready to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shawn Levy is in negotiations to take charge of Deadpool 3 as director. If he signs, the film will reunite him with star Ryan Reynolds. The pair worked together on 2021’s Free Guy and this week’s The Adam Project. The film also represents the only surviving remnant of 20th Century Fox’s mutant universe — a fact we expect Deadpool (Reynolds) to mention constantly.
The project has been on the Marvel Studios board for some time with Bob’s Burgers veterans Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin working on a script since November of 2020. When it finally emerges, it will represent Marvel Studios’ first R-Rated feature; another thing we expect Deadpool to comment on. Like the first two films, the third will likely continue the irreverent tone with the title character fully aware he is in a film, but the studio banking on him has changed. How much that will inform the picture beyond a few jokes is anyone’s guess. In fact, details about the sequel beyond its star, director, and writers are non-existent. We have no idea if characters from the earlier movies will return or if Deadpool will try to fully establish himself in the MCU.
Although, on that front, some are speculating he may pop up in May’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to underscore the precariousness of Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) predicament — and to continue the cameo buzz audiences enjoyed in Spider-Man: No Way Home, we suspect.
For Levy, getting to the Marvel league is a sort of ascension. Beginning his career as an actor (who can forget his role in Zombie Nightmare?) Levy went on to direct movies like the Night at the Museum trilogy, Real Steel, and The Internship, but he also became a pretty dependable producer on shows like Stranger Things. His films with Reynolds, though, have been well-received and sound investments. We also imagine his friendship with Reynolds also lead to the decision to tap him as director.
Deadpool 3 is not yet scheduled for release, but with Disney holding several dates in 2024 for untitled Marvel films, it is easy to imagine it landing in one of the slots.
