Directed by Robert Eggers (The Lighthouse), The Northman follows a young Viking prince on his quest to avenge his father’s murder. Eggers is proving to be one of the most exciting rising cinematic talents. After watching an in depth BAFTA lecture with the director I was impressed by his commitment to historical accuracy and passion for mythological stories. He mentions how Oedipus and Hamlet still have resonance centuries later and that’s what he tries to achieve with his films.
Judging by how unorthodox The Lighthouse turned out, I suspect there’s more than meets the eye to this gritty historical action film. It also helps that The Northman has a stellar cast of actors including Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe. Period-piece action is my favorite movie genre and its exciting that this genre continues to have an audience.
Look for The Northman in theaters in 2022.
