‘Batgirl’ Goes For The Burnside Look In First Costume Photo From HBO Max Movie

Batgirl is headed straight for Burnside … with the costume at least.

Late on Friday, the film’s star, Leslie Grace, released a first look photo of herself in costume and, as fans of the Burnside costume, we’re thrilled to see it.

Debuting in 2014’s Batgirl (Vol 4) #35, the costume was stitched together from the remains of Barbara’s storage locker and other pieces of clothing after her technologically advanced WayneTech suit was destroyed. The change coincided with her move to the Burnside area of Gotham City. Babs continued to wear the costume through to 2018’s Batgirl (Vol 5) #26. In the interim, it became a fan favorite. As seen above, it balances out the more fanciful colors and look of the character’s 1960s costume and a practicality lots of cosplayers appreciated. It also offers Batgirl a youthful contrast to the sleek costumes of the Batman by the point she enters the crimefighting world.

In the film, Barbara goes from an eager GCPD recruit to a member of the vigilante class. Besides Grace, the film will feature J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon and Michael Keaton as Batman. Rebecca Front, Corey Johnson, and Ethan Kai are also signed on, but their roles are unknown at this time. Brendan Fraser will also reportedly play Firefly. Ms. Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah take the helm while Birds of Prey‘s Christina Hodson provides the script. Recent photos from the set suggest it will mix-and-match some of the history of the DC Films band (like Simmons returning as Jim Gordon) with other lore from the DC Multiverse. Hopefully, that blending will be as successful as the Burnside costume seen here.

The film will premiere on HBO Max sometime in the future.
