Micheal Keaton Reportedly Joins ‘Batgirl’

And where is the Batman (Michael Keaton)? Joining HBO Max’s Batgirl.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming film from Ms. Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah and Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson, will be the second return appearance of Keaton’s Batman. The character, which he first played in 1989’s Batman, will also appear in November’s The Flash.

Leslie Grace stars as Barbara Gordon, the police commissioner’s daughter whose own planned GCPD career gets sidetracked when she becomes a costumed hero. J.K. Simmons will reprise his role as Jim Gordon from Justice League, but with Keaton joining the festivities, it seems the film will take place in yet another variant DC Universe instead of the Man of Steel reality or even the original Batman continuity, where Gordon was played by the late Pat Hingle. The presumed lead villain is Firefly, to be played by Doom Patrol‘s Brendan Fraser.

Production on Batgirl is currently underway with a presumed 2022 release date — although this could change as scheduling is always a bit imprecise these days. Additionally, the project was part of DC Film’s plan to provide HBO Max with two films a year, but with Blue Beetle switching to a theatrical release, it is always possible Batgirl may enjoy the same fate.
