NYCC 2021: Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo open up about ‘We Have Demons’ and their partnership

Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo gave background and details about their latest title We Have Demons and the evolution of their relationship as creators at their NYCC panel on Saturday evening.

We Have Demons is the first book of “Scottober,” the name of Snyder’s new line for Comixology Unlimited which will feature eight books written by Snyder over the next eighteen months in collaboration with a slew of all-star artists.

We Have Demons was released this week and is the first creator-owned work between Snyder and Capullo after their highly acclaimed runs on titles such as Batman and Death Metal.

Speaking on Demons, Snyder detailed how gratifying the process of working on a creator-owned book with Capullo was away from the pressure of usual mainstream superhero comics.

“We get to do the fun R rated Saturday morning cartoon thing we do, but finally on our own terms.” Snyder said. “DC’s been very kind to us over the years, but we’ve still wanted to make something that was ours. Big heart, big fists, fangs, fists, action, more gore that you’ve come to expect from us, but our way.”

Snyder’s move to digital is one of the most unique of any of his contemporaries, an initiative he said was largely influenced by the events of the pandemic.

“When I saw how hard everyone was hit, I realized we want a healthier stronger market on the other side.”

Snyder’s Comixology line eliminates the usual competition between print and digital comics, instead creating a process of consuming media that is much more similar to streaming services utilized for film and television like Netflix and Hulu. Titles will be immediately available to browse for all Comixology Unlimited subscribers, and will then be available in print at a later time for those fans who want to collect physical copies.

While Snyder is enthusiastic about the horror iconography and sprawling internal mythology of We Have Demons, his impetus for writing the story came from wanting to explore the paternal connection between himself and his growing children.

“There’s a scene in Demons where the main character talks about how it’s harder to grow up now than it was in her father’s time, and that kind of parental messaging is a big part of the book for me.

Talking further about his process, Snyder continued:  “Comics are a weird job. Most people avoid the deepest parts of their minds, but our job is to make stuff out of that. You’re always looking in the mirror and dealing with what bothers you or inspires you.”

On discussing the evolution of their multi-year creative relationship, Capullo said that it has been a long and evolving process to reach the rhythm that duo has arrived at.

“We have kind of opposite ways of working,” Capullo said of his partner.  “Over the years I’ve given him advice about using less dialogue and things like that. He still writes how he’s comfortable but he removes things that are a hindrance to me mapping out exact panels and layouts.”

Snyder elaborated and said that he often beats out a whole story for himself, but will take out much of the detail before sending it to Capullo in order to let him dictate the pacing of the story.

“He’ll tell me what actions occur between certain pages,” Capullo explained.  “Even if Scott knows more specifically what happens, he won’t give all that to me. He’ll give me the freedom to pace it out first. It’s been a slow evolution of him giving me more freedom to do what I need, and I think that’s what really made our creative relationship work.”

Even amidst the high sales numbers and fan acclaim for their runs on books for DC comics, Snyder and Capullo contend that they are most excited about their upcoming work for We Have Demons.

“It’s the best work we’ve done,” Snyder said at the end of the panel. “I think we both feel that way.”
