Although it seems Disney is slowing down developments on all fronts, Lucasfilm confirmed Tuesday a couple of interesting continuing projects.

The Mandalorian & Grogu, a newly announced feature film, will begin production later this year. To be directed by Jon Favreau — with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and chief creative officer Dave Filoni producing alongside Favreau — it will tell the next chapter in the title characters’ journeys.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” Favreau said in a statement. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.” Kennedy added that the story Favreau and Filoni want to tell with this feature is the prefect reason to bring the Disney+ characters to the big screen.

Rumor of the project had been circulating for some time.

The Mandalorian & Grogu joins the slate Kennedy announced at last year’s Star Wars celebration: a continuation of Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) story as she tries to establish a new Jedi Order, from director  Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy; the story of the first Jedi, from Logan‘s James Mangold; and Filoni’s feature debut, which will likely cap off many of the stories begun in the early seasons of The Mandalorian and his current tale concerning Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen).

The Lucasfilm press release also confirms Filoni is working on a second season of Ahsoka, the Disney+ series he spearheaded last year. At the time of its final episode, it was unclear if the program would continue despite some pointed shots and scenes at the end indicating Jedi exile Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and apprentice Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) still have a ways to go in a different galaxy far, far away. At the end of the first season, the two characters were left stranded on a distant planet with two other Force-sensitives who claim to be neither Jedi nor Sith. The elder of the two, played by the late Ray Stevenson, set on his own mission regarding the Mortis gods from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It remains to be seen if that thread will continue, though, as the actor passed away shortly before Ahsoka premiered.

Also unclear: if The Mandalorian will continue as a series. Although Favreau claimed in February of last year that scripts were already written, rumors about the feature film indicated those scripts could be reformatted into a feature screenplay. With production expected to begin on the movie in the near-future, it seems Season 4 will either have to wait or The Mandalorian & Grogu will be the end of their ongoing story.

Then again, Star Wars is in need of a conclusion or two even if the galaxy itself goes on and on.
