Do you want some more weird Valentine’s Day lore that may or may not be true? Of course you do! It seems that back in the day, ancient Greeks and Romans used a thing called ornithomancy to predict the future. I am sure, like necromancy, and pyromancy, and all the other -mancys, there are deep rituals and esoteric bits of knowledge needed to do it correctly, but the basics are that they would go bird watching and then based on what they saw they would predict the future.
This practice got folded into local folklore and somehow as it all blended together the idea that if an unmarried woman laid eyes on a bird on Valentine’s Day, it would somehow predict what her future husband would be like. A dove could mean loyalty, a raven could mean you were marrying a wizard, and a blackbird could mean you were marrying someone who would be baked in a pie.
Speaking of things that somehow got stuck together but seemingly have nothing in common, like random birds and who you are going to marry, I’m about to pivot from telling you about birdwatching to telling you about The Nightmare Before Christmas Funko Pop! figures.
