Review: Buggy Audio And Bonkers Sci-Fi Make For A Troubled ‘Rebel Moon’ Premiere

Rebel Moon is a retelling of Seven Samurai set in a space opera world directed by Zack Snyder. The project was co-written by Snyder, Shay Hatten (John Wick 3), and Kurt Johnstad (300). The film featured a cast of established actors like Djimon Hounsou and Anthony Hopkins, as well as rising stars like Sofia Boutella, Doona Bae, and Ray Fisher. Rebel Moon showed a lot of promise and I excitedly got tickets to the NYCC movie premiere.

When the film opened with a phallic-shaped spaceship exiting a vaginal-shaped portal I knew we were in for something… bold. Rebel Moon was clearly intended to be an R-rated film and there are several scenes that look like they’re supposed to have the 300-style slow-motion blood effect added. However, the removal of the violence lessens the impact and enjoyment of these sequences. That’s not to say the film doesn’t have its moments– the fight between Doona Bae’s character and the giant spider-woman is well choreographed and has an emotional payoff.

Even so, Love, Death, and Robots, The Boys, and Game of Thrones are all successful and don’t skimp on the gore– so why are we getting this nerfed version of Rebel Moon? Edgy, sexy, Star Wars may rub some audience members the wrong way– But I’d rather see the uncensored version of Rebel Moon hentai tentacles and all (yes there are hentai tentacles in this).

Snyder has promised an adults-only director’s cut of Rebel Moon, but the current version feels incomplete. During the NYCC premier the audio cut out several times to audible audience groans. Rebel Moon is like when AAA video game companies release a game full of bugs and a story that concludes in the DLC. Even as a fan of 300 and Man of Steel, Rebel Moon feels like it missed the mark. Rebel Moon joins Jupiter Ascending, Mortal Engines, and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets as another gonzo blockbuster.

Rebel Moon Part 1 will be streaming on Netflix December 22.
