Guillermo Del Toro has been a champion for the narrative potential of animation. And at Annecy 2023 he announced that he planned on doing more animated films that focus on realism and mature storytelling. The auteur director points out that no matter how many successes he’s had in the past, every film is a challenge and he doesn’t get to do whatever he wants all the time. It’s important for young professionals to learn that even their artistic heroes face uphill battles.
Fortunately for us, Del Toro is still crazy passionate about animation. His next animated project will be a stop-motion adaptation of The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro. The fantasy novel follows an elderly Briton couple, Axl and Beatrice, living in a fictional post-Arthurian England in which no one is able to retain long-term memories. After dimly recalling that they might years earlier have had a son, the couple decide to travel to a neighboring village to seek him out.
The Buried Giant sounds like an excellent story for a masterful director to adapt.
