Comicon’s Holiday Shopping Guide 2023, Part 1

Looking for the perfect gift for your favorite comic book enthusiast, gamer, cinephile, or collector? Holiday shopping can be a real struggle. We have some ideas to help. Welcome to Comicon’s Holiday Shopping Guide 2023, Part 1.

Surely You Can’t Be Serious: The True Story of Airplane! $27  -submitted by Tom Smithyman

What can you make of this? It’s the movie that changed comedy – along with Leslie Neilson’s career. Airplane! was made for only $3.5 million and went on to earn almost $200 million, leaving audiences in stitches and its creators laughing all the way to the bank. This book, an oral history of the making of the 1980 film, chronicles the making of the film. There are plenty of behind-the-scenes stories and factoids about everything from “jive talk” to Peter Graves’ disdain for the script.

Mick Foley Cameo -submitted by Brendan Allen

Celebrity meet and greets have become a staple at almost every convention. The ability to meet your favorite celebrities and grab a photo or autograph is pretty cool. Cameo evokes some of those same feelings with personalized video messages from actors, musicians, athletes, comedians, and… professional wrestlers. The site boasts a roster more than 50,000 deep. I haven’t counted, but there are a lot.

Hardcore legend Mick Foley is one of the most popular talents on the site, known for consistently over-delivering for his fans with personal and unique messages. With well over 5,000 five star reviews, Mick makes sure each and every fan gets the most ‘Bang! Bang!’ for their buck. Mick also keeps the prices low for his fans, but asks that you book on the website rather than the app, since Cameo pays out less for bookings on the app for some reason.

Mick also turns these things around ridiculously quickly, so if you somehow forgot to get Grandma something nice and the family party is in a couple days, you can count on Mama Foley’s baby boy to get your video back to you within 24 hours.

And continuing down the rabbit hole of Peanuts Christmas stuff… how about something old school. Kids, think of it like an Apple Watch that just tells you the time.

For the action figure fan who loves a Galaxy Far, Far Away -submitted by Tony Thornley

The Star Wars Black Series from Hasbro will probably release figures until the heat death of the universe. That’s how many characters inhabit the Galaxy Far, Far Away. One of the coolest new subsets of the line is the hologram series, featuring ultra-popular Star Wars characters in a translucent blue plastic that recalls the bounty chip holograms as seen in The Mandalorian. We like Han Solo’s in particular, but there’s also The Mandalorian’s Din Djarin. Both figures are available now for pre-order, and will begin shipping in early December.

Fanhome E.T. The Extra Terrestrial Build-Up Subscription -submitted by Brendan Allen

Standing over 2 feet tall and depicted with lifelike realism, Fanhome’s E.T. The Extra Terrestrial was designed with the guidance of the family of Carlo Rambaldi, the Italian designer who brought the original character to life for the film. The completed figure features articulated arms and an extendable neck, just like in the movie. LED capabilities include a light-up index finger and “heart light” that add to E.T.’s realistic appearance along with moveable eyes and facial expressions.

I saw this model in person at New York Comic Con last October, and I have to say, it’s one of the coolest home-build model kits I’ve ever seen.

Star Wars Bluetooth Speaker $39 -submitted by Tom Smithyman

How is it possible that we’ve rocked around the Christmas tree for years without this unique speaker? From the very first scene of A New Hope, star destroyers have awed us with their massive scale and destructive firepower. Now you can use that power for good by blasting your favorite tunes through the launch bay. And it even comes with John Williams’ iconic main theme music. It also includes a rechargeable battery. Droids and Sith lords, unfortunately, are not included.

For the action figure fan who likes DC Comics -submitted by Tony Thornley

DC Comics’ relationship with McFarlane Toys has turned into some truly great action figures in the DC Multiverse line. The latest wave of figures has some fantastic picks for fans of the entire DC Universe- a 1990’s inspired long-haired Superman with Krypto the Superdog, Captain Carrot with his design from Justice League Incarnate, and Batman with a Green Lantern ring. All three will be available in December, for about $30 each from all major retailers, or as a discounted bundle from the McFarlane Toys online store.

Drokk The Halls Thrill Seekers! -Submitted by Richard Bruton

A brand-new set of 2000 AD inspired Christmas jumpers to really annoy Aunt Gladys around the Christmas dinner table this year!

The three new designs are Judge Dredd, Nemesis & Strontium Dog inspired festive jumpers featuring knitted-effect designs – ‘Ho Drokking Ho’ Dredd, ‘Be Pure, Be Vigilant, Be Merry’ Nemesis The Warlock, and a green and yellow Stront Dog design.

Unisex fit, these jumpers are print on demand from Rebellion’s online store but available worldwide thanks to printing and fulfilment centres in North America and Europe.

£31.50 (about $40.21 USD)

Spider-Man Holiday T-Shirt – $29.99   -submitted by Tom Smithyman

No one loves the holidays more than your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. You can show off your own holiday spirit with this fun T-shirt featuring the web-slinger wearing Santa’s iconic hat. It’s festive and geeky without being obnoxious. And who doesn’t love Spidey? (OK, other than the Green Goblin, but he’s basically the Grinch in disguise anyway.) You’ll want to hurry on this one, though. While Spidey can swing through the streets of New York, this shirt is not available for express delivery.

Peanuts Christmas Nativity Figure Set -Submitted by Richard Bruton

You know what it’s like, you’re thinking I fancy putting up a nativity scene this year, but what I really want is one that includes Snoopy and Charlie Brown and the whole gang.

Well, it turns out there’s exactly the nativity scene for you. Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy, Sally, Peppermint Patty, all gathered round the crib. It’s just wonderfully ridiculous and can be as denominational as you want.

I spotted this in Marshalls, but no doubt you can find it in many different stores.

Get a kid’s comic subscription… -Submitted by Richard Bruton

I do this every year and I absolutely refuse to stop – there’s no better present for any kids in your family than a subscription to great comics and we’re lucky enough to have three of them in the UK…

The Phoenix – Subscriptions start from £1/$1 for six issues. Here are the links for the UK, and the US.

Beano – Subscriptions start from £1 for the first month and then £11 every month.

Monster Fun – Subscriptions start  from £1.75 per month.

A Song of Fire and Ice 2024 Calendar – $18  -submitted by Tom Smithyman

For those who prefer their calendars hanging on a wall instead of on their phones, George R.R. Martin has a 2024 A Song of Fire and Ice calendar. Beautifully illustrated by Justin Sweet, the calendar features those who have molded Westeros from HBO’s Game of Thrones series. It includes the infamous Targaryen reign as well as Robert Baratheon’s Rebellion. It’s a nice way to count the days while you’re waiting for the second season of House of the Dragon or – as improbable as it seems – the last two books in Martin’s series. We can dream, can’t we???

For the action figure collector and 80’s cartoon fan -submitted by Tony Thornley

Hasbro has owned GI Joe and Transformers for decades, yet there are very few actual crossover toys. Hasbro has begun to remedy that, with this year’s release being the coolest of the three to date. The set features Decepticon Soundwave, with a new alt-mode as a Dreadnok Thunder Machine, Ravage and Dreadnok leaders Zartan and Zarana. It’s a fantastic set for a Joe or Transformers collector, and is available for pre-order now, expected to ship in early
