Adult Animation Revolution: Touring The LAIKA Exhibit At MoPop Seattle

Hidden Worlds: The Films Of Laika is a new exhibition at the Museum of Popular Culture in Seattle. The exhibit offers a close-up look at the puppets and props from Laika’s films: Coraline, ParaNorman, Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Missing Link. If you’re a fan of the films, this is an opportunity that can’t be missed!

“Movie magic” is a term that is used more often than it is felt. Yet the emotional response I received when seeing some of my favorite animated characters in real life was akin to magic. I was blown away by witnessing the massive 16 ft tall giant skeleton that Kubo fights in his film. There is such a level of craft and detail to every character and set that each one stands alone at a unique work of art.

In founding Laika, director Travis Knight wanted to created films that were bold, distinctive, enduring, challenging, and thought provoking. The studio’s commitment to telling different types of stories and defying the traditional limitations of stop-motion has birthed unique films that withstand the test of time. The exploration of the macabre and using genre as a metaphor for outsiders has garnered a fanbase of spooky kids and creative adults.

The Laika exhibit shares space with other titans of popular culture including Scifi, Fantasy, Horror, Punk Rock, Hip Hop, and indie games. Not only is the Laika exhibit the most impressive show at the museum but Laika’s films and creative spirit are well met. The artists working at Laika have created their own stories equal in value to any fantasy or horror canon. Laika brings a much needed rebellious spirit to animation worthy of Punk Rock and Hip Hop. Laika tells quirky personal stories with a handcrafted appeal present in indie games. I can’t wait to enter the worlds that Laika creates up on the big screen for years to come.

You can plan your trip to Hidden Worlds: The Films Of Laika on the official MoPop Seattle website.
