‘The Favorite’ Deserves Your Attention

After being intrigued by the trailer for Poor Things , I decided to check out Director Yorgos Lanthimos’s other film, The Favorite. The film follows Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) and Abigail (Emma Stone) who compete for the affection of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman). In this high stakes game of manners no one can be trusted and everyone has ulterior motives.

While I’ve never been one for stuffy British aristocrat dramas, Lanthimos adds a darkly comedic tone that brings gritty modernity to the period setting. Scenes are shot in slow-motion and use a fisheye lens to convey the topsy-turvy aspects of royal life. The script is sharply written with each line carrying multiple meanings. I was pleasantly surprised at how enthralling it was to see Emma Stone’s character claw her way to the top. Rachel Weisz gives one of her best performances in recent memory with the equally charismatic and cruel Lady Sarah. The Favorite is a bold, ambitious film with excellent performances and a gripping story. If this is any indication for Lanthimos’s upcoming Poor Things, then we are in for a treat.
