Commentary: The Difference Between Good And Entertaining

There’s definitely a difference between a show or movie being good and it being entertaining. Good can more or less be objective. There are ways in which people judge good as different things, but an argument has to be made to justify that opinion. Being entertaining is something entirely different. It’s subjective to a person finding enjoyment from something without the need to justify that enjoyment. In which case, someone can actually consider something bad and entertaining at the same time. And a good example of this is RIPD 2.

The original film starred Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds. It had a relatively big budget and came from a major Hollywood studio, Universal. The sequel was anything but. It was extremely low budget and a direct-to-video release. In fact, it felt like a completely different franchise and was a sequel in name only. The writing was weak, the cinematography felt lazy, and the effects were extremely lackluster. It was hard to find anything objectively good about the film.

Nevertheless, enjoyment could still be found within. In this day and age, movies are constantly trying to appear flashier than they really are. This movie tried to do that, but it just didn’t have the resources. Instead, it could not help but be a low budget B movie reminiscent of so many indie films that came out in the 1980s and 90s. Those movies didn’t have large budgets or a ton of production value. What they did have were filmmakers trying to make sci-fi and action films with whatever means they had. They didn’t necessarily have to be good, but there was a respectable determination to make a movie. That’s the kind of feeling RIPD 2 gives off. It’s not great comparatively speaking, but fans of those old low budget films can find a certain kind of nostalgia while watching it. In that way, it can still be entertaining even while it’s bad.

RIPD 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
