Paul Tells Chani Of Caladan’s Waters In ‘Dune: Part 2’ Trailer

Sure, there’s a lot of bombast and intriguing moments in the trailer for Warner Bros. Pictures’ Dune: Part 2 — including the battle cry “Long Live The Fighters” as marketing text — but fans of Frank Herbert‘s novel will be most interested in the scene which opens the preview: Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalament) telling Chani (Zendaya) about the waters of his homeworld, Planet Caladan.

In the novel, Paul first sees Chani in a dream asking about the waters of his homeworld. He contemplates the request as it is without any context at that point in his life. After defeating Jamus in the knife fight and earning the secret name “Usul” among the Fremen of Sietch Tabr, Chani makes the dream a true prophecy by asking the question. But, notably, this is the end of the scene. Paul’s response is not recorded.

As seen in the trailer above, though, having the conversation about Caladan’s abundant water is an opportunity for the two to bond. It’s disarming and reminds the viewer that both of these characters are still supposed to be kids at this point in Dune‘s epic story. Trained within an inch of their life to kill, of course, but still kids.

Beyond some real bonding between Paul and Chani, the trailer concerns itself with Paul’s first sandworm rider — a big deal for any Fremen warrior — and the introduction of Princess Irulan Corrino (Florence Pugh) and Na-Baron Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (Austin Butler), two pivotal figures in the latter moments of the novel. Although, we have to admit the glimpse of Irulan actually writing may be as exciting as any sandworm scene in director Denis Villeneuve‘s follow-up to 2021’s Dune.

Dune: Part 2 opens on November 3rd.
