‘Blue Beetle’ Sets Its Tone In First Film Trailer

The final run of the DC Films regime continues with Blue Beetle. Due out later this summer, Warner Bros. has released a trailer that finally gives some idea of what to expect from the picture. Xolo Maridueña stars as Jaime Reyes, a young man trying to to help his struggling family. But his latest job interview goes sideways when he’s given an alien scarab that grafts a super-powered exoskeleton to his body. Now trying to learn the superhero ropes, he’s hounded by Kord Industries, who claim the scarab belong to them. Will Jaime establish his own identity, evade Kord, and help his family?

The ghost of the film’s original distribution scheme — straight to HBO Max — can be felt throughout. Also, there’s a certain Power Rangers vibe to it, which is a legitimate tone, particularly for a teen-focused hero.

As it happens, the film’s future canonicity is up for debate. Made by the former DC Films at a time when they wanted to promote a Multiverse of characters and variants, the movie is presumably not set in the Man of Steel reality. With that, DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran claim Blue Beetle can be adopted into the emerging DCU. But as with all of the DC movies until Superman: Legacy, Jaime’s film future is unclear.

Blue Beetle comes to theaters on August 18th.
