Directed by Antoine Fuqua and staring Will Smith, Emancipation is about one man who escapes slavery and fights through unthinkable terrors in an attempt to reunite with his family. What’s really striking is the use of color desaturation — it gives the film a painterly quality and an epic feel. Fuqua should be on more peoples radars with films like Training Day, Equalizer, and the criminally underrated King Arthur (go watch the director’s cut). Smith appears to be giving his all for this role. Seeing as this is the first film post the Oscars fiasco it remains to be seen if Emancipation can heal Smith’s reputation as an actor.
Emancipation premieres in theaters December 2, streaming on Apple TV+ December 9.
