As a boy, Fenix saw his father cut off his mother’s arms, and the resulting trauma sent him to a mental hospital. When mom visits him years later, he escapes, but soon must satisfy her thirst for santa sangre (“holy blood”). Alejandro Jodorowsky (El Topo, The Holy Mountain) does his surreal take on the horror genre with homages to classics like The Unknown, Psycho, and Eyes Without A Face. Santa Sangre is definitely one of the most accessible of Jodorowsky’s films. So if your curious about this visionary auteur this film is a great place to start.
