Brendan Gleeson Reportedly Joins ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’

Joker: Folie à Deux continues to build an impressive cast.

Deadline reports veteran actor Brendan Gleeson has joined the film in an as-yet undisclosed role. The film will also see the return of Joaquin Phoenix as the titular villain and, oddly enough, Zazie Beetz as the (former?) object of his affections. And since that relationship never actually existed, Lady Gaga joins the ensemble as Harley Quinn. Director Todd Phillips also returns as director with co-writer Scott Silver.

Any other plot details are, of course, scarce, but it is assumed the film will pick up with Joker (aka Arthur Fleck) still at Arkham Asylum. If Gaga begins the film as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, it is possible Gleeson will be some sort of hospital administrator — or, if Phillips is interested in more DC characters, Hugo Strange himself. Also, as the first Joker owed a great deal to Martin Scorsese films like Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, there is a suggestion that Folie à Deux will take some cues from Scorsese’s 1977 musical, New York, New York.

The project is also the only DC-related film to get a green light in the Warner Bros. Discovery era. Other films in development have either been abandoned, stuck in development for years, or, in the case of Batgirl, shelved entirely despite being nearly completed. That said, a full roster of theatrical films, including Shazam! and Aquaman sequels, is planned for 2023. Black Adam, meanwhile, is set for release this October.

Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled for release on October 4th, 2024.
