On Friday, Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that Skybound Entertainment is currently in negotiations with Hasbro to acquire the publishing license for Transformers and G.I. Joe.
As most of you likely know, Skybound is an imprint of Image Comics that’s operated by The Walking Dead scribe Robert Kirkman. According to Kit’s report, however, Kirkman would not personally write any of the potential G.I. Joe or Transformers books, which wouldn’t begin to be published until 2023. That said, Kit also states that Kirkman is personally involved in the negotiations with Hasbro and is a huge fan of both franchises.
So yeah…you can bet on him writing at least a miniseries or two if his company ends up securing the rights.
On the other side of things, this deal would be a huge blow to IDW. Transformers and G.I. Joe are two of their most lucrative and recognizable properties. They still have plenty of other big franchises in their library (Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters, and Locke & Key, to name a few), but one has to assume that the folks in charge are sweating bullets over this deal.
Skybound had no comment at the time of Kit’s report yesterday, but it’s safe to assume that if the trade magazines have gotten wind of it, then the deal is almost done.
