Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favorite), Poor Things centers on the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist, Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). But hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a debauched lawyer, on an adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
Poor Things combines Victorian drama with a surreal mixed-media fantasy world. I hope the film does well because I’d like to see more fantasy films embrace the charm of artifice instead of drowning everything in CGI. Perhaps Poor Things could rekindle an interest in mixing live-action with stop-motion puppetry. I’d love to see a Ray Harryhausen-inspired adventure film with the production values of today.
