Who is David Bowie? — ‘Moonage Daydream’ Mini Reivew

David Bowie is a name that keeps resurfacing. He’s cited as an influence for Lady Gaga, Nicolas Cage, Taika Waititi, and many others. Bowie also served as inspiration for Frank Miller’s, Joker in The Dark Night Returns as well as for the many colorful outfits worn by characters in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure by Hirohiko Araki. Yet for those of us who didn’t grow up with Bowie’s music, the performer and the appeal remains a mystery.

Moonage Daydream is a psychedelic documentary that juxtaposes experimental filmmaking with interviews of Bowie to create a pop art portrait of the unique artist. Through his music and performances, Bowie sought to give audiences a taste of the 21st Century before they had entered it. It’s amazing how many of his ideas seem even more relevant today. Bowie’s music, that sought to emulate the busyness of city life, would only be further accelerated by the internet. The exploration of bisexuality and gender-nonconformity is even more common today. The desire to create something sacred and meaningful in a post-existentialist world may be needed now more than ever.

Moonage Daydream is a welcome addition to the new wave of films like Baz Luhrmann’s, Elvis. These films manage to capture the essence of a performer and make them impactful for a new generation. Bowie’s creativity and philosophy will no doubt inspire artists and creatives for years to come.

Moonage Daydream is now streaming on HBO Max.
