DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn Opts To Direct ‘Superman: Legacy’ Himself

It was inevitable, now it’s official.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn will direct Superman: Legacy. Previously, the DC executive and director of The Suicide Squad and the Guardians of the Galaxy film series was only slated to write the script. In explaining his hesitation, Gunn took to Twitter to say he had been offered Superman before making his DC debut, but was unsure how to access the character.

“Then a bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes,” he wrote. “Just because I write something doesn’t mean I feel it in my bones, visually and emotionally, enough to spend over two years directing it, especially not something of this magnitude. But, the long and the short of it is, I love this script, and I’m incredibly excited as we begin this journey.”

As the film will be part of Gunn’s overall “Chapter One” plan for the DC Cinematic Universe — or DCU — it is something of a reboot, but it will not be an origin story. Instead, Superman (to be cast) will still be establishing his dual identities in Metropolis even as the question of his heritage comes to the fore. Beyond that, the only other thing known about the film is that it will serve as the proper introduction to the DCU following the reset in this summer’s The Flash feature film and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the last film made under the previous DC Films organization.

Next up for Gunn: finding his Superman. While Dwayne Johnson and Henry Cavill tried to cook up a return for the latter’s Man of Steel in the final moments of Black Adam, no deal with Cavill was ever made and Gunn opted to focus his story on a younger Clark Kent, aging out Cavill despite still being in his prime. The new Superman will likely be in his late twenties, but still retain much of the qualities Cavill and actors before him have possessed. Still, finding Kal-El is never an easy task.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled for release on July 11th, 2025.
