Despite nearly a decade of project development, directors signing on and leaving, a close call with Grant Morrison, and star Ezra Miller‘s legal troubles, The Flash feature film apparently exists. And as a trailer for the movie released during the Big Game revealed, everything is Barry Allen’s (Miller) fault.
As a first solo feature outing for the character, it appears to be something of a miscalculation; the Scarlet Speedster wrecks his own universe to save his mother (Maribel Verdú). But re-framed as the capstone to the last ten years of Warner’s attempts to make a DC cinematic universe, it has some appeal. For one thing, Sasha Calle actually looks great as a decidedly different Supergirl. And, for another, it is interesting to see two Batmen make appearances. Also, we’re glad the studio did not play coy with Michael Keaton saying his famous line here in the first major preview.
It is unclear if the film will actually work. According to new DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, The Flash is one of the best superhero movies he’s seen. We doubt that, though, as it was both a troubled throughout its development process and its final form is viewed by Safran and fellow DC Studios CEO Jame Gunn as the last statement on the universe began in Man of Steel.
Nevertheless, we hope to pleasantly surprised when The Flash runs into theaters on June 16th.
