‘Red Notice’ And ‘The Orville’ — Adaptions That Aren’t Adaptations

It’s funny how often times an adaptation of a particular IP tries too hard to be its source material. The writers, actors, and directors feel such a need to please the fan base that they lose sight of what makes those properties so special in the first place. It’s ironic because, sometimes, other properties that have nothing to do with whatever is being adapted might embody the spirit of the adaptation better than some actual adaptations. That might be confusing, so it’s probably best to provide some examples.

The film Red Notice is an action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson, and Gal Gadot. The film is enjoyable by itself, but the story is essentially about Johnson and Reynolds teaming up to stop Gadot’s character, a thief of impressive renown who repeatedly gets the better of them. Now it might not be a perfect Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? adaptation, but it has all of the elements of what could make a good adaptation of that franchise. The Orville, meanwhile, has plenty of sci-fi action and political intrigue with humanity trying to forge a path in space alongside other species. That alone makes it the perfect adaptation of Mass Effect; this doesn’t even take into account how the show tries to deal with humanity’s war with a race of sentient artificial intelligence, just like the first three Mass Effect games.

Obviously, these aren’t Carmen Sandiego and Mass Effect adaptations, but these two properties embody a lot of the elements that make those stories and characters so great. It might just be fan speculation and headcanon to treat them as adaptations, but it’s still a lot of fun to imagine. There are so many actual adaptations that fall flat that it’s a pleasant fan experience to just pretend for one viewing.
