Surprise! Damon Lindelof is developing a Star Wars film project
Deadline reports the Watchmen showrunner has been co-writing a Star Wars script with an unnamed partner for sometime and the project has recruited Ms. Marvel episode director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy to helm whatever it turns out to be. Although it is still early going, the site’s source claimed “it was important to Lucasfilm and Lindelof that a director be brought on so that person’s own vision for where they see this story headed gets included in the script.”
Other details are, of course, nonexistent beyond a belief that the project has the most momentum of the various Star Wars film ideas said to be baking inside Lucasfilm. But as the fictional universe has over 10,000 years of history to explore and an entire galaxy to roam around in, the hope is for something far away from the Skywalker Saga and the galactic civil war of the extant film and television series. But then again, as Andor proves, there are still corner of those conflicts to explore in compelling and unique ways.
Beyond the Obaid-Chinoy/Lindelof project, other Star Wars film on the horizon included an entry from director Taika Waititi, a trilogy from Knives Out director Rian Johnson — although it is unclear if he will direct the pictures himself — a film from Marvel boss Kevin Feige and Loki writer Michael Landron, and, of course, presumably, the previously announced Rogue Squadron even if the when, how, and who are all up for debate.
