Ahead of Marvel Studio’s Comic-Con International: San Diego presentation in two weeks, a new name enters the Marvel Studios directing ranks.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Cloverfield Paradox director Julius Onah will take the reins of the fourth Captain America film. Currently untitled, it will feature Anthony Mackie as Captain America, carrying on from the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. But even if he is firmly established as the owner of Cap’s shield, we expect Sam (Mackie) will still face resistance even as he charts a new age of heroism.
TFATWS head writer Malcolm Spellman is writing the script alongside Dalan Musson, one of the show’s staff writers. The pair were first said to be working on the script shortly after the limited series finished its Disney+ run last year. But it seemed to still be early days for the project at the time. The arrival of a director suggests it will go into production relatively quickly.
Indeed, we expect Marvel Studios will confirm Onah’s involvement during its return to SDCC’s Hall H on July 23rd. As is the tradition, Marvel usually confirms trade paper scoops at fan or investor events and there will be plenty for them to discuss. Beyond Onah signing up to direct Cap 4, still unconfirmed projects like Thunderbolts and far-off Disney+ series like the new Daredevil will also likely be announced. We also expect recent news like Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio‘s involvement in the upcoming Echo series to get a shout-out. And on the far end of possibility, Marvel may reveal the director and cast of Fantastic Four, but one can never be sure of what news the studio will let out into the open.
Captain America 4, meanwhile, is not on the release schedule yet. But with Disney holding several release dates for Marvel projects through November 2024, it is possible the film could be ready in two years’ time.
