Directed by Jung Byung-gil (The Villainess) Carter is about a man with no memory, a bomb in his head, and a mission. With The Villainess Jung Byung-gil took the martial arts action genre to new heights, thanks in part to a seven-minute-long, first-person POV fight scene. The film also featured a motorcycle chase with katanas so epic, it was copied in John Wick 3.
There’s a new wave of Asian action cinema more brutal and emotional than anything that’s come before. The American approach to action movies is to add levity to every scene by cracking one-liners and destroying buildings like it’s a fireworks show. In New Wave Action Cinema, the characters have more emotional complexity, they morn their dead, and the violence looks like it hurts.
Netflix has a solid library of international action films like The Night Comes for Us, Headshot, Revenger, and Furie. Judging by the trailer Carter could easily join the ranks of New Wave Action Cinema. I hope that the film finds a surprise audience like Squid Game and RRR did upon their debuts on the platform.
Carter will be streaming on Netflix August 5th.
