Destin Daniel Cretton To Direct ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’

The Marvel Studios machine never stops.

On the heels of their impressive Hall H showing at Comic-Con International: San Diego comes word that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton will helm Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Or, at least, Deadline is reporting the filmmaker “has been tapped.”

As announced at Comic-Con, the film will be the first half of a two-part Avengers event which will close out both Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and The Multiverse Saga — the collective name for all the Phase 4, 5, and 6 projects. The concluding film, Avengers: Secret Wars, was also announced at SDCC along with a surprising amount of information about the Phases through 2025. November’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forver will close out Phase 4 with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opening Phase 5  and introducing the saga’s primary villain, Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), next February. The phase will conclude with Thunderbolts on July 26th, 2024 and Phase 6 will begin with Fantastic Four on November 8th, 2024.

While quite an emotional Hall H appearance from the studio, the amount of information revealed by studio president Kevin Fiege was something of a surprise. He usually keeps the length of phases close to the vest and did not title the first saga until it was pretty much over. Nevertheless, it was exciting to learn the shape of Marvel’s output over the next several years even as a few things, like Deadpool 3 and Cretton’s Wonder Man series, still need to be slotted into place.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is set for release on May 2nd, 2025.
