Animation Professionals Speak Out Against Disney’s Inaction Against The “Don’t Say Gay Bill”

Today several Disney employees took to Twitter to address their company’s inaction on Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill also known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

According to ABC News, this legislation states that a school district “may not encourage classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students.”

Effectively this legislation would discourage teachers from discussing or encouraging an openness to LGBTQ+ identities and topics. As reported by the Orlando Sentinel, Disney has funded every sponsor or co-sponsor of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

Disney Employees expressed that it’s hypocritical for a company that’s positioned itself as wholesome and inclusive to financially support politicians that are effectively targeting LGBTQ children and parents. In addition, many Disney employees were forced to relocate to Florida to keep their positions. And, as the home of Disneyland, Florida’s legislation matters. In response, Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Chapek delivered a lengthy statement which can be read fully via the Hollywood Reporter.

The Disney Corporation has nearly monopolized pop culture with its acquisition of Pixar, Fox, Marvel, and Star Wars. Even taking a neutral stance on this bill will have destructive ramifications.
