Delroy Lindo is finally making his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor is in final negotiations to join the cast of Marvel Studios’ Blade. The film will star Mahershala Ali as the hybrid human/vampire slayer. Director Bassam Tariq will take the helm with a script from Stacy Osei-Kuffour. As with most trade paper reporting, it is unclear who Lindo will play. Although, one good guess is Jamal Afari, the man who raised Blade in the comics and taught him to be a vampire hunter. The character became Abraham Whistler for the Wesley Snipes-starring film trilogy, where he was played by Kris Kristofferson.
The addition of Lindo is the first word on the project in many months. Indeed, news of Blade has been rare since it was announced at Marvel’s 2019 Comic-Con International: San Diego presentation, with word of Osie-Kuffor and Tariq punctuating the silence. According to THR’s report, the film is expected to start production next summer.
Lindo previously flirted with a Marvel role when he was cast as Dominic Fortune in ABC’s ill-fated Marvel’s Most Wanted pilot. Had the idea gone to series, Lindo’s character would have been giving missions to former S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Bobbie Morse (Adrianne Palicki) and Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) even as they attempted to clear their own names. Fernanda Andrade and Oded Fehr also appeared in the pilot.
Blade is currently not scheduled for release, but Disney is holding a number of late 2023 and 2024 slots for untitled Marvel movies. Surely, it could be ready for one of them.
