When it comes to 1980s fantasy films, puppetry, and animatronics, one name rules them all: Jim Henson.
Henson’s Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal will be made available on 4K Digital for purchase or rent on February 6th.
Shout! Studios recently acquired the rights to both films as part of a larger deal with The Jim Henson Company, and we’re hoping that they’ll reveal plans for a physical release on 4K disc and Blu-ray soon.
Directed by Henson and executive produced by George Lucas, 1986’s Labyrinth follows Sarah Williams (future Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly) as she makes her way through the surreal labyrinth of the Goblin King Jareth (a deliciously over-the-top David Bowie) after her younger brother Toby goes missing. Stuffed with eye-popping effects and animatronics — and featuring original Bowie tunes — Labyrinth is one of Henson’s wildest creations.
1982’s nightmarish animatronic-aided fantasy The Dark Crystal, directed by Henson and his “Muppets” co-hort Frank Oz, takes place on the strange planet of Thra, where the evil Skeksis rule with an iron fist. The Gelflings Jen and Kira embark on a magical quest to restore the titular crystal in order to bring peace to the land.
Both films will be available to purchase or rent on February 6th from AppleTV, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Redbox Digital, Vudu, Microsoft, and other digital platforms.
Apple iTunes users get a wealth of extras for both titles, including dual commentaries from conceptual designer Brian Froud, behind-the-scenes specials, featurettes, trailers, a Labyrinth Q&A, and a deleted Dark Crystal scene.
