It’s amazing how much expectations can shape a viewing experience. Rarely do audiences go into a film knowing nothing about it. This is much harder to do with new releases, especially one that comes from a fandom. This is the atmosphere that Zack Snyder‘s Rebel Moon: Part One — A Child of Fire was released into. It was labeled as a Star Wars knockoff right out of the gate, and Snyder himself also has a reputation and history behind him. All of this conjures a very unique mindset for a fan to enter when viewing the film. But it’s important to have a positive mindset when viewing a movie to get the most out of it, regardless of what biases may exist.
Right from the title, it’s obvious that Rebel Moon is going to have many echoes of the original Star Wars. The film is about a strong military force that comes from the motherland, which is essentially a stand in for the cruel First Galactic Empire. There are many blatant moments when characters talk about revolution and resisting their oppressors. Because of the similarities, many fans have dismissed the film entirely as a cheap imitation.
But Snyder is known for overindulgence in a lot of his movies. 300 and Sucker Punch are two examples of how much Snyder can lean into dramatic and intensified action. Rebel Moon is no different. In fact, the action is so stylized it seems as if it came right from the mind of a teenager. Taking this thought further, the teenage mindset could also apply to the story. It comes off as if it was written by a teen who watched Star Wars and decided to make their own version of it. So, if going into the film, one was expecting to see teenage Star Wars fanfiction then they can enjoy it more than if they expected something else. Also, it provides a reason for someone who wouldn’t like teenage Star Wars fanfiction not to see it as they will surely be disappointed.
Rebel Moon: Part One — A Child of Fire is now streaming on Netflix.
