The Franchise Continues: Upcoming Cinema — ‘Saw X’

The Saw franchise will always hold a special place in my heart. Specifically, the dead horse that is the John Kramer saga. I’m not sure where my strong ties to these films come from. I’m unsure If it’s my love for the deep film coloration and sharp edits that have become not only a staple to the series but a call back to the aughts from which it came. It could be an increasingly convoluted story, timeline, and retcons that keep me engaged and fixated on putting the pieces together. Honestly, it could very well be as simple as the thoughtfulness and brutality of the death traps that the movies employ and helped make popular. Regardless of the reasoning, I love Saw.

Saw X sees a return to form in that it centers around John Kramer. While the Saw ‘cineverse’ tried something new in Spiral, I don’t think it was ever the intent. Spiral was a vessel for Chris Rock after the comic showed interest in a starring role. Saw X has been in the back of minds since the release of Jigsaw in 2017 at least.

John Kramer is alive. Set some time before his death in the second and third films, Saw X centers around a group of medical staff being ‘tested’ because they offered to assist in John’s cancer treatment only to scam him out of money, time, and hope.

You can clearly see the increased production value from the trailer alone. It features wide area shots of a cityscape, crisp details and colorwork, and best of all several snippets of new traps. The most talked about trap by far is what is being called ‘The Brain Surgery Trap’. It appears one of the victims is strapped to a chair with his skullcap removed, and required to perform brain surgery on himself. The rating of the film is not yet confirmed, but at a predicted near two hours I’m hopeful we’ll be allowed to endure all of the nitty gritty details.

Perhaps feeling more confident in itself, or maybe just eager to begin making back its estimated 10 million dollar budget, Saw X has moved away from a traditional Halloween release date and instead will be in theaters in the US September 29th, 2023. I’m excited to see how it will do.

Oh yes, there will be blood.
