Emma Stone Stars In Surrealist SciFi Film ‘Poor Things’

From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster) and producer Emma Stone comes the tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on an adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

Poor Things caught my eye because of its creative costume and set design. The film appears to embrace mixed-media in a way most other Sci-fi movies try to disguise. The use of practical effects and miniatures reminds me of the Gorillaz Plastic Beach. Perhaps Poor Things could rekindle an interest in mixing live-action with stop-motion puppetry. I’d love to see a Ray Harryhausen-inspired adventure film with the production values of today.

Poor Things will release in theaters September 8th.
