‘RIPD’ And The Art Of Lowering Expectations

It’s no surprise to anyone that movie goers are incredibly divisive these days. With the implementation of CGI technology, film fans have tremendously high expectations for their favorite superhero and fantasy movies. This is in large part due to many critically acclaimed movies that took a very serious and dramatic approach to their stories. But a large part of how someone views a particular film is the expectation one has going into the movie. If expectations are high or placed in a certain direction, then that person may have a terrible time simply because those expectations were not met. If expectations are muted, however, then it’s far easier for someone to enjoy a story that doesn’t measure up.

A great example of this is the Ryan Reynolds film RIPD. The movie is essentially about an undead police department that is responsible for finding souls who escape judgment and don’t want to go to Hell. It’s a bonkers premise based on a comic book and features wild action, special effects, and goofy dialogue. It’s definitely not high art, but it’s meant to be a wild and crazy fun time at the movies.

Those that go into the film with high expectations are absolutely going to be let down. The characterization isn’t top-notch, the action and dialogue are cheesy, and the special effects leave something to be desired by today’s standards. But that doesn’t mean the film lacks for fun. This is especially true for kids who don’t hold movies to a higher standard. If a moviegoer goes into this film knowing exactly what it is and what it’s about, there’s still plenty to love and laugh at. In today’s hot button culture of fandoms going to war with each other, the world may just be a better place if everyone lowers their expectations a bit and doesn’t treat every film as needing to be the best thing ever made.

RIPD is now streaming on Netflix.
