There’s been much excitement after James Gunn outlined the upcoming film slate for the DC Cinematic Universe. The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Paradise Lost all have the potential to be great. Gunn’s proposed approach to have “director driven” films is a smart move. As a DC Comics fan, and a connoisseur of visionary directors, I’ve listed several directors I’d like to see get their own DCU film.
Baz Luhrmann
With Elvis, Luhrmann proved he could take a historical American icon and make him resonate with a contemporary audience. Luhrmann’s stylized storytelling could show audiences a new vision of a comic book film. Luhrmann would rock an adaptation of Mark Waid and Alex Ross’s Kingdom Come.
Coralie Fargeat
Revenge is one of the most visceral films I’ve ever seen. Coralie Fargeat has established herself as a force of nature to be reckoned with. If James Gunn is looking for someone to create a subversive vision for Supergirl, Fargeat can deliver in spades.
Ilya Naishuller
I’ve been a fan of Naishuller’s work ever since his first person POV music videos. Naishuller is known for his relentless action films, Nobody and Hardcore Henry, as well as experimental music videos. Naishuller could become the hottest director in the world if matched with the right DC project.
S.S. Rajamouli
S.S. Rajamouli has proven with RRR and Baahubali that he can deliver operatic spectacle with a megaton of heart. Every frame Rajamouli puts on screen is masterfully composed like a mythological painting. Whatever DCU project he works on, it’s going to be big.
Jonas Akerlund
With Polar, Jonas Akerlund delivered a stylized action thriller with a twisted sense of humor and visual finesse. Akerlund has a unique approach to action and dark comedy that would make him a perfect match for a Lobo movie.
Matthew Vaughn
With hits like Kingsman: Secret Service, Kickass, and X-Men First Class, Vaughn is no stranger to comic book movies. Gunn briefly mentioned Vaughn as a blockbuster director who doesn’t get lost in the superficiality. Vaughn would probably be a perfect match for The Authority adaptation.
Jeymes Samuel
The Harder They Fall was really refreshing in its approach to music, costuming, and rhythmic storytelling. Samuel has a unique directorial point of view that could add something new to the DCU.
Gareth Evans
As the director of The Raid 1 and 2, Evans established himself as a staple of the action genre that many are still trying to emulate. Evans gives his action stars deep emotional investment in addition to brutal fights. I’d love to see what Evans would do with an R-rated Deathstroke movie.
Richard Ayoade
Richard Ayoade is known for his role as Maurice Moss in The IT Crowd. Ayoade then went on to direct two quirky indie comedies, Submarine and The Double. With directing chops and comedic wit, Ayoade could be the next Taika Waititi.
Neill Blomkamp
With District 9, Chappie, and Oats Studios, Blomkamp is known for his gritty Scifi aesthetic. Alien technology and gadgetry are staples of the superhero genre. Blomkamp’s unique vision could reinvent the Scifi aspects of the DC Universe.
Jeong Byeong-gil
Known for The Villainess and Carter, Byeong-gil has a vision that’s often times bigger than the film’s budget. If Byeong-gil was given a fight-focused comic book project, he could deliver action on a scale that would leave audience’s jaws on the floor.
Donald Glover
With a successful career in music and the hit FX series Atlanta, Glover could make a contemporary rendition of Static Shock that would resonate with audiences. Glover’s projects are teeming with humor, social satire, and creativity. His voice is exactly where comic book movies should be going in the future.
