Shawn Levy‘s course may be set for the Star Wars galaxy.
Variety reports the Stranger Things producer (and director of films like Real Steel and Free Guy) is in early talks to helm a Star Wars feature. The project would slot in after his commitments to Stranger Things‘ final season and Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3.
Naturally, any further details are for the Bothans to uncover. As a whole, Star Wars‘s film trajectory is murky with projects announced and seemingly abandoned or converted into Disney+ series. But with media corporations attempting to reinvigorate theatrical exhibition, a strong Star Wars lineup will be essential. Besides Levy’s potential film, Taika Waititi is set to direct a film while Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige is developing another alongside writer Michael Waldron.
And, of course, there is the trilogy Rian Johnson is working on, but has seemingly hit the backburner as he completes two Knives Out sequels for Netflix. Also, Patty Jenkins‘s Rogue Squadron is seemingly still on the production slate despite a halt in its development. In more recent days, word of a project from Damon Lindelof ans director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy set after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker emerged, suggesting the future of the series timeline will continue in features.
Or maybe not? When we spoke to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy during Star Wars Celebration in May, she indicated other time periods are also under consideration for future projects. But without a concrete, Marvel-esque calendar, it is impossible to say when any of these films will arrive or how they will fit together.
