Well, finally some good news in the DC Entertainment Multiverse.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Suicide Squad director James Gunn and Aquaman producer Peter Safran will chart the destiny of characters like Peacemaker, Superman, and more as co-chairs and co-CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios. The division will take control of DC’s film, television, and animation efforts in the ever-evolving Warner Bros. Discovery corporate strategy. Gunn will be the creative chief of the new operation while Safran will manage the business and production side. The pair will report to WBD CEO David Zaslav while still working with Warner Bros. Pictures bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy — sidestepping the usual chain of command in the Warner structure.
The news comes after a couple of wins for the beleaguered DC brand. Johnson’s Black Adam was number one at the box office over the weekend and on Monday, Henry Cavill confirmed he will return as Superman in an upcoming DC project.
“DC has among the most entertaining, powerful, and iconic characters in the world and I am thrilled to have the singular and complementary talents of James and Peter joining our world-class team and overseeing the creative direction of the storied DC Universe,” Zaslav said in a statement.
In their own statement, Gunn and Safran said, “We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told.”
The deal for both executives is said to be good for four years, during which Gunn will be exclusive to DC Studios. It is presumed he will still write and direct projects while acting in a senior creative capacity. Let’s start the speculation now: he’s making Cavill’s Superman movie.
Also, let’s assume Gunn is, at long last, the equivalent of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige Warner has been searching for these last few years. While THR notes Joker and The Batman movies will likely remain outside his purview, he will be empowered to finally make the DC film universe a more cohesive and consistent experience. We definitely look forward to seeing how he accomplishes it.
Meanwhile, Gunn has two final Marvel projects to complete: The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
