Mad God is a stop-motion horror Odyssey hand-crafted and directed by Phil Tippett (Star Wars, Jurassic Park). The film follows an assassin through a forbidding world of tortured souls, decrepit bunkers, and wretched monstrosities forged from the most primordial horrors of the subconscious mind.
Tippett takes viewers through a surreal nightmare with imagery worthy of Mad Max, Metropolis, Eraserhead, and Bloodborn. The film’s abstract narrative explores themes of lost things, the struggle for survival, the exploitation of the feeble, and the banality of relentless war. The film plays out largely non-verbally and allows the audience to project their own feelings and divine their own meanings.
The lack of a traditional narrative may prove to be off-putting for casual audiences. Yet, Mad God, both in presentation and production, was never meant to be a traditional film. Mad God has more in common with early surrealist films than any contemporary horror stories. The mad world Tippett created will no doubt gain a cult-following and inspire a new generation of horror filmmakers. As an example of transgressive one-of-a-kind adult animated films Mad God is a triumph.
Phil Tippett’s Mad God is now streaming on Shudder.
