Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ Movie Reportedly A Go With Director Jake Schreier

Marvel’s reaching into its vast library for a Thunderbolts film.

Deadline reports Robot & Frank director Jake Schreier will helm the project with a script from Black Widow‘s Eric Pearson. The anti-hero team, created by Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley, first appeared in 1997’s The Incredible Hulk #449 and depicted the team as a replacement for the Avengers when that group was presumed dead. But the first issue of their self-titled comic revealed they were really the Masters of Evil under the direction of Baron Zemo. The Thunderbolts ultimately rejected him and try to make amends, but things never work out that smoothly as successful lineups have wavered in purpose or work at the behest of people like Norman Osborn.

At this point, it is unclear who will be on the team or what purpose they will serve. Deadline reports several established MCU actors have been contacted about a summer 2023 production and suggest characters like Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and USAgent (Wyatt Russell) could be on the roster. They also mentioned Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl), who would no doubt end up the team leader. That said, the other members of the possible roster suggests Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) may be steering things with this team.

While previously not on the public Marvel Studios calendar, the film was being discussed within the Hollywood apparatus with directors making pitches for it and Fantastic Four. With that film still needing a director, Thunderbolts may take its place on the schedule.
