Voltron may soon form as a live action film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber is now part of a package making the rounds through the major studios. Thurber will co-write with Ellen Shanman. Producers include Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman with World Events Productions head Bob Koplar also attached. The site goes on to say a number of studios are engaged in a bidding war for the project and that, curiously enough, Netflix is not among them.
The potential film is based, of course, on the 1980s cartoon series — itself a remix of the Japanese anime series Beast King GoLion — about five space explorers who end up piloting a might robot known as Voltron. They use its powers to defend planet Arus from the evil Emperor Zarkon and his dreams of galactic conquest. In the annuls of pop culture, the series in infamous for writing around one of the pilot’s deaths and various call-outs on Wu-Tang Clan tracks. Though its popularity waned with the start of the 1990s, it never completely went away and attempts to make a film date back to the turn of the 21st Century. A creatively successful reboot, Voltron: Legendary Defender, streamed on Netflix a few years back — making their absence from the bidding war something of a surprise.
It is easy to assume Thurber and his partners are looking to make a film on the scale of something like Godzilla vs. King Kong, a complexity which always made previous attempts falter. Nowadays, though, production realities are different and it might actually happen. For long time readers of Comicon, projects like this usually get compared to the likelihood of a Robotech movie getting made. And while we said for years such a film will never happen, the chances of both Voltron and Robotech happening are a fair share more likely these days.
