Sometimes, miracles do happen.
Deadline reports Sharon Stone is in “final talks” to play Victoria Kord, the villain in Warner Bros. Picture’s upcoming Blue Beetle and we cannot be more thrilled. The film stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, a teenage boy on the US/Mexico border who discovers a scarab which is really an alien battle suit. Soon, he learns to harness his new powers and becomes part of the DC Multiverse along the way. The cast also includes George Lopez, Adrianna Barraza, Harvey Guillén, Bruna Marquezine, Damián Alcázar, Belissa Escobedo, and Elpidia Carrillo. Based on the character created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers and Cully Hammer (the original Blue Beetle was created by Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski and, possibly, Will Eisner), the script comes from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. Ms. Marvel director Angel Manuel Soto will helm the project.
This will be Stone’s second turn as the foe of a DC hero, she also played the principal antagonist in the much-maligned Catwoman. Nevertheless, she is a wonderful presence in films both sublime and cheesy. We can’t wait to see what sort of energy she brings to the film. But for those always on the lookout for Ted Kord, the second Blue Beetle, the last name of her character is also a shock. According to Deadline, the character is a new creation for the film, but will likely be Ted’s wife … which means there may be a place for him in the film. Well, we hope so, anyway.
The movie was originally meant to be part of a DC Films commitment to provide two features to HBO Max every year, but as it took shape, Warner moved the film to its theatrical calendar. The other HBO Max project, Batgirl, is staying on the service for now. The change also quieted some criticism of the DC Films plan as both Batgirl and Blue Beetle stars happen to be people of color while the DC theatrical superheroes are predominately white.
Blue Beetle is set for release on August 23rd, 2023.
