A ‘Nova’ Project Is Finally In The Works At Marvel Studios

It looks like Nova will finally be getting a solo outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Deadline reports Moon Knight staff writer Sabir Pirzada has been tapped to adapt the concept for a Marvel Studios project, although it is unclear if it will be a film or Disney+ series. Created by Marv Wolfman in 1966 for his fanzine Super Adventures with John Romita Sr. eventually finalizing the design, he brought the character to Marvel Comics ten years later with John Buscema providing art. The initial concept at Marvel focused on Richard Rider, a teenager chosen by the last member of Xandar’s Nova Corps to inherit his suit and obligations. Unfortunately, the Nova Corpsman dies before giving Rider any instructions. So Rider joins the Marvel superhero community in New York. Across the years, he becomes part various teams, helps defend Xandar from the Skrulls, and loses his powers only to gain them back.

The Nova Corps itself has appeared in the MCU via Guardians of the Galaxy, but Rider has been noticeably absent — perhaps the studio was wary of using characters Wolfman sued to reclaim in the early part of the century. But with Blade also making his MCU debut soon, Marvel’s hold on the characters must be airtight now. Whatever the reason, the addition of Rider to the universe may finally answer a dangling plot thread from Avengers: Infinity War regarding Thanos’s (Josh Brolin) invasion of Xandar. Scenes were shot, but ultimately deleted and we’re only told of the devastation he left behind while claiming the Power Stone from the Nova Corps vault. Seeing the last member of the Corps passing his suit and abilities to Rider could tie things up and allow for the Corps to eventually rise again thanks to Rider.

But as it is unclear what sort of project this will be, maybe speculating about its place in the MCU is premature. And as Marvel has not yet confirmed its existence, it is clearly not schedule for release any time soon.
